MOSAIC
Accelerating the Introduction of New HIV Prevention Options for Women and Girls
The Background
Despite major global progress on HIV over the past three decades, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15 – 24 remain at incredibly high risk of contracting the disease. In sub-Saharan Africa, an estimated 460 AGYW contract HIV each day, accounting for one in five of all new HIV infections, despite AGYW being just 10% of the population.
Maximizing Options to Advance Informed Choice for HIV Prevention (MOSAIC) is working to address this challenge. As a five-year (2021-2026) project funded by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), MOSAIC seeks to prevent HIV infections in adolescent girls and women by accelerating the introduction and scaling of new and emerging biomedical prevention products across 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Lesotho, Uganda, Namibia, and Nigeria. The MOSAIC consortium is led by FHI 360 and core partners Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI), Pangaea Zimbabwe AIDS Trust (PZAT), LVCT Health, Jhpiego and AVAC.
Our Approach
Afton Bloom has been a longstanding partner on MOSAIC. Our team supports strategic learning and planning across the Consortium and conducts strategic analyses to support policy development across all MOSAIC countries. For example, as new products emerge like the dapivirine ring or long-acting cabotegravir, Afton Bloom works with local partners to conduct national situation analyses that highlight what's needed to introduce new products, including considerations for policy development, supply chain, health systems, and demand generation. To complete these analyses, Afton Bloom engages with key national HIV prevention stakeholders, global coordinating organizations, implementing partners, civil society organizations and end user advocates.
The Result
Our work has helped advance introduction of innovative new HIV prevention products for women and girls. Afton Bloom's analyses are regularly used by Ministries of Health and global donors across MOSAIC countries to inform policy and guideline development and to facilitate cross-sector coordination.
